A symbol can often tell ourselves, and others, what we are, or how we see ourselves. Having a foreign Monarch as a “symbolic ruler” makes us “symbolic serfs”, and Australia a “symbolic colony”.
To those Monarchists who would then maintain that symbols are of no need for concern, it could be then stated that therefore they shouldn’t mind the national flag being changed, or even the Monarchy being changed to a Republic.”
