Argument: The area in the ANWR under consideration for drilling is relatively small

Issue Report: Oil Drilling in Arctic Wildlife Refuge

Support

  • ANWR.org “Top 10 reasons to support development in ANWR” – “1. Only 8% of ANWR Would Be Considered for Exploration Only the 1.5 million acre or 8% on the northern coast of ANWR is being considered for development. The remaining 17.5 million acres or 92% of ANWR will remain permanently closed to any kind of development. If oil is discovered, less than 2000 acres of the over 1.5 million acres of the Coastal Plain would be affected. That¹s less than half of one percent of ANWR that would be affected by production activity.”

Counter-argument

This argument becomes invalid by common sense prediction. As you can clearly see the area is currently NOT open for developement but is being pressured towards releasing 8% of it’s land. If oil is discovered the amount of land for developement will only increase. Greed will take over and the arguement will only increase to “Oh but it’s only 6% more than we had before” all for the strength and economy of the U.S.A. It’s like lending money to someone, you never do it because if you do they get the idea they can keep coming back for more and more. This is the same mentality and it’s going to lead to the same result. It’s a gateway to bigger things.
