Argument: Polygamy does not exist for religious reasons

Issue Report: Polygamy

Reasons to agree

  1. John R. Llewellyn, former polygamist. “Polygamy vs. common sense. Christian Polygamy; What Does the Term Mean?”. Retrieved 4.24.08 – “Christian Polygamy; What Does the Term Mean? “They would like you to think it means polygamy is a religious undertaking. But it doesn’t mean that at all. The fact of the matter is that it doesn’t mean anything, its just another illusion to justify a human desire. The Biblical patriarchs practiced polygamy for economic, social and political reasons. Religion had nothing to do with it. To say polygamy is biblical is to say incest, rape and murder is biblical. You can find it all in the Bible.”

Reasons to disagree

  1. This argument makes since to Christians who want to see the Bible as enforcing their politician beliefs, but the fact of the matter is that in the Bible, we are told that God told Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to all take more than one wife. If you want to infer that God told them to do these things for economic, social, or political reasons that is fine, but you are deluding yourself if you discount the fact that the Bible tells us about God sanctioned polygamy more than he sanctioned rape, incest, or murder. But God did sanction Murder in the Bible. The problem is taking the Bible literally, not that somehow Mormon Polygamist don’t read it right.
