Hugo Black wrote: “Amendment rests on the assumption that the widest possible dissemination of information from diverse and antagonistic sources is essential to the welfare of the public, that a free press is a condition of a free society.” According to a May 18, 2009 article in The Nation, “Black argued for the right and necessity of the government to counteract private monopolistic control over the media.”[1]
