Argument: Increasing oil prices will increase pressure to drill in ANWR

Issue Report: Oil Drilling in Arctic Wildlife Refuge

Argument summary

Oil prices are very high. With global supply problems, trouble in the Middle East, and a long-term outlook of oil reserve depletion, these prices are likely to increase. With increasing prices, public demands will increase to find new sources of oil, which can increase supply and thus decrease prices. Even if ANWR won’t make a dramatic price difference, any oil price reduction could be seen as very appealing by the general public. Drilling in ANWR provides a partial solution, and as oil prices continue to increase, this solution may become more and more favorable to the general public. Given that America is currently fairly divided on this issue, it is not unforeseeable that a majority of Americans may come to favor drilling in ANWR.
