“The rule of law prevails”. The Globe and Mail. January 23, 2009 – By acting swiftly in announcing that he would close the prison for suspected terrorists at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, within a year, President Barack Obama vindicated the rule of law. Any wavering – by declaring that he needed to know who would be tried, and how, and what would happen with the others – would have sent exactly the wrong signal. The details can wait; the principle had to be defended.
