“The case against compulsory voting in democracies” Helium: “Some researchers speculate that compulsory voting has become something of a social norm, much like other laws have become accepted as socially integrated in the United States. To not vote in Australia, perhaps, is to commit a social act of ignorance. In any case, compulsory voting has been widely accepted in Australia, and most of Lijphart’s comments on the practice’s effects upon democracy seem to pan out quite accurately.”
