Argument: Abuses happen in monogamy too; why alienate polygamy?

Issue Report: Polygamy

Reasons to agree

  1. “Anti-polygamy statutes assault civil liberties”. Daily Herald. June 25th, 2006. Anne Wilde, Salt Lake City. – “While I support the idea of a man having more than one wife, I do not support child brides nor any kind of sexual abuses whether in a polygamous relationship or monogamous.”
  2. Serenity Valley. “The Argument for Legalization of Polygamy”. Later-day Saint Liberation Front. February 28th, 2006 – “People often point out that polygamous marriage can lead to abuse. That’s certainly true. Polygamous marriages can lead to spousal abuse, but so can monogamous marriages; should we outlaw monogamous marriages as well?”
  3. Jonathan Turley. “Polygamy laws expose our own hypocrisy”. USAToday. 10/3/2004 – “While the justifications have changed over the years, the most common argument today in favor of a criminal ban is that underage girls have been coerced into polygamist marriages. There are indeed such cases. However, banning polygamy is no more a solution to child abuse than banning marriage would be a solution to spousal abuse. The country has laws to punish pedophiles and there is no religious exception to those laws.”

Reasons to disagree

  1. Polygamy is singled out because it tends to happen in a compound and in home school when little girls have no exposure to alternative life styles. If polygamist would stop living in compounds, and brainwashing their children, we would stop demonizing them.
