Colleges are seen as a place in which young men and women are prepared to enter the real world. Yet, the the 21 drinking age undermines this effort. Middlebury president John McCardell put in the following terms: “Society expects us to graduate students who have been educated to drink responsibly. But society has severely circumscribed our ability to do that.”[1]
